Post-Operative Instructions for Invisalign Treatment
Congratulations on starting your Invisalign journey! To ensure the best results and a smooth experience, please follow these post-operative care instructions carefully.
- Wearing Your Aligners
✅ Wear Your Aligners for 20–22 Hours Per Day
- Only remove them for eating, drinking (except water), and brushing/flossing.
- Consistency is key! Failure to wear your aligners as instructed can delay progress.
✅ Switching to New Aligners
- Change to the next set of aligners as instructed by your dentist (typically every 7–14 days).
- Wear each set in the correct sequence to maintain treatment progression.
- If a new aligner feels tight or uncomfortable, wear it _____________________________.
✅ Using Chewies
- Bite on chewies (provided in your kit) for 5–10 minutes daily to ensure a snug fit.
- Eating & Drinking Guidelines
🚫 Remove Aligners When Eating or Drinking Anything Other Than Water
- Eating with aligners can cause cracks, stains, or warping.
- Avoid hot beverages like coffee or tea while wearing your aligners—they can distort the plastic.
✅ Brush or Rinse Your Mouth Before Reinserting Aligners
- Food particles trapped inside can lead to cavities, bad breath, and stains.
- Cleaning & Maintenance
✅ Clean Your Aligners Daily
- Use a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste) and lukewarm water to gently clean them.
- Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaning tablets can help remove buildup.
🚫 Avoid These When Cleaning Aligners
- Hot water (can warp aligners)
- Toothpaste (can scratch the plastic)
- Colored mouthwash (can stain aligners)
✅ Store Aligners Properly
- Always place aligners in their protective case when not in use.
- Do not wrap them in a napkin or leave them exposed—this leads to accidental loss or damage.
- Managing Discomfort
✅ Mild Discomfort Is Normal
- You may feel pressure or soreness, especially with a new aligner. This is a sign that your teeth are moving!
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen) if needed.
- Use a cold compress to reduce inflammation if your mouth feels sore.
🚫 Avoid Biting on Hard Foods
- If aligners make your teeth feel sensitive, opt for softer foods for the first day of each new tray.
- Speech Adjustments
- You may experience minor speech changes (a slight lisp) for the first few days.
- This will improve as you get used to wearing your aligners. Practice speaking to speed up the adjustment.
- Tracking Your Progress
✅ Use the Invisalign App (if recommended by your dentist)
- Some treatment plans require you to upload progress photos to ensure teeth are moving correctly.
- Always bring your previous aligners to check-up appointments in case adjustments are needed.
🚨 If You Lose or Break an Aligner:
- Contact our office immediately.
- Do not skip to the next aligner unless advised—it can disrupt your treatment.
- You may need to wear the previous tray until a replacement arrives.
- Long-Term Care & Retention
- Once treatment is complete, retainers will be necessary to maintain your new smile.
- Follow your dentist’s instructions on retainer wear to prevent teeth from shifting back.
