Bone Grafting

Removal of teeth is sometimes necessary because of gum disease, pain, infection, tooth fracture and unrestorable decay. The bone that holds the tooth in place (the socket) is often eroded by the disease process, resulting in deformed and low density bone in the extraction site. The bone and gum tissue of the surrounding teeth also shrinks and recedes, resulting in exposed tooth roots, sensitivity to temperature, food traps and dark spaces between the teeth.

Why Graft?

Promote implant health

When replacing a missing tooth, bone loss within the socket can compromise esthetic and functional outcomes. For example, if you are considering implants, the compromised bone may not be strong enough to hold the implant, leading to metal exposure, food traps and ultimately loss of the implant.

Adding bone to the extraction socket helps to preserve the thickness, volume and density of the bone, allowing for more predictable implant placement and restoration.

Prolong lifespan of bridges

Placing a dental bridge in an area of poor bone volume also creates food traps, whistling and spitting while speaking, and esthetic challenges.

In such cases, grafting preserves tissue volume and protects the intimate contact of the prosthesis and tissue.

Improve denture fit over time

If you are planning on dentures following tooth extractions, dentures become loose as the bone continues to dissolve over time. In such cases, eating and speaking becomes challenging, as the denture loses stability. With movement, the denture also rubs on gum tissue, creating sore spots.

Grafting the bone following tooth extraction helps to slow this process and support denture stability over time.
